Karnavedha Muhurat 2027: Dates and Times

In 2027, New Delhi has 17 days with a karnavedha muhurat in the calendar view — the rules published calendars state for a karnavedha (its stars, tithis, weekdays, season and lagna) — and 7 days in the strict view of the books. Both views keep only the hours whose rising sign (lagna) meets the act's rules, read without a birth chart. The strict view leaves out 10 of them: Simhastha Guru closes 6, the month rule 4 and the days around a combustion 1 (a day can fall under two rules). The most days fall in January (3), May (3) and November (3); March and August to October have none. Pick a date that fits the child's age: the 12th or 16th day, the 6th, 7th or 8th month, or an odd year (Muhurta Chintamani).

Computed for New Delhi (28.61° N, 77.21° E) in IST with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, for no particular person. Other cities differ by minutes. The calendar view was compared with a published almanac's karnavedha days: 14 to 26 January 2027 at New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata and 16 to 22 November 2026 and 12 and 25 February 2027 at the same cities (below).

All 17 dates of 2027 at a glance

The calendar view's dates month by month, and what the strict view does with them. The cards below give the times.

  • January: 20, 22 and 27 (3 days); the strict view keeps none
  • February: 11 and 18 (2 days); the strict view keeps them all
  • March: no date in either view
  • April: 29 (1 day); the strict view leaves it out
  • May: 12, 17 and 21 (3 days); the strict view keeps them all
  • June: 2 and 7 (2 days); the strict view keeps them all
  • July: 5 (1 day); the strict view leaves it out
  • August: no date in either view
  • September: no date in either view
  • October: no date in either view
  • November: 11, 24 and 25 (3 days); the strict view keeps none
  • December: 3 and 9 (2 days); the strict view keeps none

The calendar view ranks 11 days in 2027 "Very good", here with the star of the best window: Wednesday 20 Jan (Mrigashira); Friday 22 Jan (Punarvasu and Pushya); Thursday 11 Feb (Revati); Thursday 18 Feb (Punarvasu); Wednesday 12 May (Pushya); Monday 17 May (Hasta); Monday 7 Jun (Punarvasu); Monday 5 Jul (Pushya); Thursday 11 Nov (Revati); Friday 3 Dec (Shravana); Thursday 9 Dec (Revati). The child's own stars can still make one of them weak (below).

No date in 2027 falls on a Saturday or a Sunday.

By weekday: 3 on a Monday, 5 on a Wednesday, 6 on a Thursday and 3 on a Friday; by fortnight, 11 in the bright half and 6 in the dark half (by the tithi of the first window).

Two views, two lists

Published calendars and the books do not agree on every rule, so this page gives two lists. The calendar view follows the rules published calendars state for a karnavedha (its stars, tithis, weekdays, season and lagna). The strict view starts from the same windows and also applies Simhastha and Makara Guru (by region), the 7 days on either side of Venus' or Jupiter's combustion, the lunar months of Chaitra and Pausha, Rahu and Ketu counted in the lagna's 8th house and the whole day that holds the Sun's entry into a sign. A strict window always lies inside a calendar window, so the strict list is a shorter version of the same list, never a different one.

The biggest difference is Simhastha Guru, Jupiter in Leo: Muhurta Chintamani puts an ear piercing on the list of acts kept away from it, and many calendars do not apply it. Jupiter is in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni from 31 Oct 2026, 12:02 to 25 Jan 2027, 01:31 and from 26 Jun 2027, 05:18 to 15 Sep 2027, 09:56 IST, which the books rule out in every region; it is in the rest of Leo from 15 Sep 2027, 09:56 to 26 Nov 2027, 18:45 IST, which they rule out at New Delhi too. The Simhastha Guru guide explains the rule and its regions, and Kharmas 2026–27 the two months of the Sun in Dhanu and Meena.

Which list to follow is a family matter. If your family keeps the books strictly, use the strict view; if it goes by the printed panchang, use the calendar view. Why muhurat dates differ lists the other reasons two calendars disagree.

The calendar view was compared day by day with a widely used almanac's karnavedha days: 14 to 26 January 2027 at New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata and 16 to 22 November 2026 and 12 and 25 February 2027 at the same cities. That almanac publishes no year list for the samskaras, only a daily tool, so this is a sample of 66 day pages: it published 9 days there, on three dates, and the calendar view keeps 6 of them and adds none; the other 3, 12 February 2027 in all three cities, lie in Ashwini's first pada, a gandanta quarter this site cuts and that almanac's samskara tool does not. On the days both print, the hours differ only where this site cuts Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika or a stretch under one ghati, and they end where Aparahna begins, as that almanac's do.

Karnavedha muhurat dates 2027, month by month

Each date shows its muhurat windows in IST for New Delhi, the nakshatra and tithi in them, and a strength word. A card says when the strict view shortens or closes the day; where it says nothing, both views agree. Choose a view to see one list at a time.

Every listed day passes the rules. "Very good", "Good" and "Usable" are a rough order from classical factors (such as the star, the weekday, the bright half) — not a probability or a promise.

Closed periods for an ear piercing in 2027

These stretches rule out an ear piercing at New Delhi, computed from the ephemeris to the minute (IST). "Both views" means every list on this page leaves them out; "Strict view" means only the strict list does.

  1. Simhastha Guru: Jupiter in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni Strict view

    31 Oct 2026, 12:02 – 25 Jan 2027, 01:31

Jupiter in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni: the strict view rules out an ear piercing in every region, except while the Sun is in Mesha (Muhurta Chintamani, Shubhashubha prakarana, with Dharma Sindhu).

  2. Kharmas (the Sun in Dhanu) Both views

    16 Dec 2026, 10:25 – 14 Jan 2027, 21:10

Kharmas, the Sun in Dhanu (Sagittarius): published calendars leave it out for a karnavedha (ear piercing), so both views do.

  3. Kharmas (the Sun in Meena) Both views

    15 Mar 2027, 07:00 – 14 Apr 2027, 15:28

Kharmas, the Sun in Meena (Pisces): published calendars leave it out for a karnavedha (ear piercing), so both views do.

  4. Simhastha Guru: Jupiter in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni Strict view

    26 Jun 2027, 05:18 – 15 Sep 2027, 09:56

Jupiter in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni: the strict view rules out an ear piercing in every region, except while the Sun is in Mesha (Muhurta Chintamani, Shubhashubha prakarana, with Dharma Sindhu).

  5. Venus about to set (vriddha) Strict view

    29 Jun 2027, 20:42 – 6 Jul 2027, 20:42

The 7 days before the planet sets (vriddha — Dharma Sindhu's middle view): the strict view only.

  6. Venus combust (Shukra asta) Both views

    6 Jul 2027, 20:42 – 17 Sep 2027, 22:48

Venus is combust by Surya Siddhanta's orbs (10°, 8° while retrograde): both views rule out an ear piercing — Muhurta Chintamani's Shubhashubha prakarana names it among the acts kept away from combustion. Almanacs that judge the planet's visibility can differ by a few days.

  7. Chaturmas Both views

    13 Jul 2027, 12:09 – 10 Nov 2027, 09:11

Chaturmas (Hari-shayana), from Devshayani to Dev Uthani Ekadashi: no karnavedha in either view (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana; published calendars apply it too).

  8. Jupiter about to set (vriddha) Strict view

    9 Aug 2027, 19:42 – 16 Aug 2027, 19:42

The 7 days before the planet sets (vriddha — Dharma Sindhu's middle view): the strict view only.

  9. Jupiter combust (Guru asta) Both views

    16 Aug 2027, 19:42 – 15 Sep 2027, 03:12

Jupiter is combust by Surya Siddhanta's orbs (11°): both views rule out an ear piercing.

  10. Jupiter newly risen (balya) Strict view

    15 Sep 2027, 03:12 – 22 Sep 2027, 03:12

The 7 days after the planet rises again (balya — Dharma Sindhu's middle view): the strict view only.

  11. Simhastha Guru: Jupiter in the rest of Simha (regional) Strict view

    15 Sep 2027, 09:56 – 26 Nov 2027, 18:45

Jupiter in the rest of Simha: the strict view rules out an ear piercing between the Ganga and the Godavari and in Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha, which takes in New Delhi.

  12. Venus newly risen (balya) Strict view

    17 Sep 2027, 22:48 – 24 Sep 2027, 22:48

The 7 days after the planet rises again (balya — Dharma Sindhu's middle view): the strict view only.

  13. Kharmas (the Sun in Dhanu) Both views

    16 Dec 2027, 16:38 – 15 Jan 2028, 03:24

Kharmas, the Sun in Dhanu (Sagittarius): published calendars leave it out for a karnavedha (ear piercing), so both views do.

Sankrantis: the Sun's entry into each sign

Garga, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana, allows no auspicious act on the day of a sankranti. The calendar view leaves out its punya day as published calendars reckon it — the day of the Sun's entry, or the next day when the Sun enters after sunset; the strict view also leaves out the day that holds the entry. The Sun's entries in 2027 at New Delhi, in IST:

  • Makara (Capricorn): the Sun enters at 14 Jan 2027, 21:10
  • Kumbha (Aquarius): the Sun enters at 13 Feb 2027, 10:09
  • Meena (Pisces): the Sun enters at 15 Mar 2027, 07:00
  • Mesha (Aries): the Sun enters at 14 Apr 2027, 15:28
  • Vrishabha (Taurus): the Sun enters at 15 May 2027, 12:19
  • Mithuna (Gemini): the Sun enters at 15 Jun 2027, 18:55
  • Karka (Cancer): the Sun enters at 17 Jul 2027, 05:48
  • Simha (Leo): the Sun enters at 17 Aug 2027, 14:13
  • Kanya (Virgo): the Sun enters at 17 Sep 2027, 14:10
  • Tula (Libra): the Sun enters at 18 Oct 2027, 02:08
  • Vrishchika (Scorpio): the Sun enters at 17 Nov 2027, 01:58
  • Dhanu (Sagittarius): the Sun enters at 16 Dec 2027, 16:38

Neither list rules out an ear piercing for these periods at New Delhi. Holashtak is kept by Muhurta Chintamani only on the Beas, the Ravi and the Sutlej and at Pushkar. If your family keeps any of them, skip those dates (IST):

  • Holashtak: 15 Mar 2027, 10:51 – 22 Mar 2027, 16:13

How these dates are chosen

  • The Moon's nakshatra: Shravana, Dhanishtha, Punarvasu and the soft and swift stars — Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishtha and Revati (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana; published calendars list the same).
  • The season: never in Kharmas (the Sun in Dhanu or Meena) or Chaturmas (Hari-shayana) — published calendars apply both, and Muhurta Chintamani names Hari-shayana. Never in an adhika month, never while Venus or Jupiter is combust (Surya Siddhanta's orbs: Venus 10°, 8° while retrograde, Jupiter 11°): ear-piercing is on the book's combustion list.
  • The tithi: any tithi but the rikta ones (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya (published calendars apply the same; Muhurta Chintamani also leaves out a kshaya tithi — below).
  • The weekday: only Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana; published calendars apply it too).
  • The hours: only before Aparahna — the last two fifths of the daytime are left out, as published calendars apply it.
  • The child's age: the 12th or 16th day, the 6th, 7th or 8th month, or an odd year (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana; published calendars add the 10th day). A karnavedha is a family rite: a doctor's advice for the child comes first.
  • The lagna, which both views check: only the hours whose rising sign is a sign of Venus or Jupiter — Vrishabha, Tula, Dhanu or Meena — with the 8th house empty (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana, with its commentary; read by the seven grahas, as published calendars read it for a mundan and a namkaran); Narada, quoted there, bars Simha, Vrishchika and Kumbha too. Each window is such a stretch of a ghati or more; a day with none is closed.
  • Never in a kshaya tithi — one current at no sunrise at the place (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana).
  • Never in the varjyam of the day's nakshatra — its tyajya ghatis: the four of the star's sixty parts that follow the count the book gives for it (after 50 in Ashwini, 30 in Punarvasu, 20 in Pushya and in Chitra, 56 in Mula, and so on), in proportion to the star's own length (Muhurta Chintamani, Vivaha prakarana: avoided in every auspicious act). On the days compared, a present-day almanac's samskara tools hid this span in Punarvasu and Pushya, and in Ashwini and Chitra from one part later; the exception the commentary quotes for a strong Moon is not applied.
  • Never on the day of a sankranti or of an eclipse: Garga, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana, allows no auspicious act then, "even at its due time". The calendar view leaves out the sankranti's punya day as published calendars reckon it — the next day when the Sun enters after sunset; the strict view also leaves out the day that holds the entry.
  • No Bhadra (Vishti karana): it is avoided whole. The finer rules of its abode and its tail are not applied, so this list is stricter than calendars that apply them.
  • The yoga: never Vyatipata or Vaidhriti; of the other inauspicious yogas only the opening ghatis are cut — Vishkambha 5 ghatis, Atiganda 6 ghatis, Shula 7 ghatis, Ganda 6 ghatis, Vyaghata 9 ghatis, Vajra 9 ghatis, Parigha its first half (a ghati is 24 minutes; Muhurta Chintamani, Shubhashubha prakarana).
  • Gandanta: the last quarter of Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati and the first quarter of Magha, Mula and Ashwini are cut out (Kalaprakasika; Muhurta Chintamani states it in its Vivaha prakarana).
  • Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika — the day's eighths by weekday — are cut out of every window (South Indian practice, Kalaprakasika). Kalaprakasika itself does not count Gulika as inauspicious; these lists cut it anyway, as many calendars do, so they are a little stricter there.
  • A window keeps at least one ghati (24 minutes) of clean time, and a day shows up to three.
  • Strength: "Very good", "Good" and "Usable" are a rough order from the star's grade, a favoured weekday (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and the bright half — not a probability.

What the strict view adds

  • Simhastha Guru: Jupiter in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni rules out an ear piercing everywhere; Jupiter in the rest of Simha rules it out between the Ganga and the Godavari and in Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha (which takes in New Delhi); the rule is lifted while the Sun is in Mesha (Muhurta Chintamani, Shubhashubha prakarana, with Dharma Sindhu).
  • Makara Guru: Jupiter in Makara, avoided only in Konkan, Magadha, Bengal and Sindh — not at New Delhi.
  • The 7 days before Venus or Jupiter sets and the 7 days after it rises (vriddha and balya — Dharma Sindhu's middle view).
  • The lunar months of Chaitra and Pausha (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana).
  • Rahu and Ketu count in the lagna's 8th house: the books ask for the 8th empty, and the strict view reads it by all nine grahas, where published calendars and the calendar view count the seven.
  • The day that holds the Sun's entry into a sign, besides the punya day the calendar view leaves out (Garga, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana).
  • Holashtak, Phalguna Shukla Ashtami to Purnima: Muhurta Chintamani (Shubhashubha prakarana, quoting Shighrabodha) keeps it only on the Beas, the Ravi and the Sutlej and at Pushkar; not at New Delhi.

What these lists leave to you

  • The child's chart and the exact moment: both views keep only the hours whose rising sign meets the rules above, read without a birth chart. The lagna rules that read the child's own chart — never the 8th sign from the child's birth sign or lagna — and the navamsha are left to the priest, or to the personal muhurat, which reads the child's kundli.
  • The child: the age your family keeps, the child's own Tara Bala and Chandra Bala, and the child's birth month are not known to a public list.
  • The child's birth star (janma tara), which the book bars for an ear piercing, is not checked here.
  • An eclipse is counted wherever on Earth it is seen (the stricter reading); vriddhi tithis, tithi gandanta, the dagdha and visha tithi–weekday pairs, Chandra Bala's vedha, the visha ghatis of the tithi and of the weekday that the commentary quotes from the Daivajna-manohara, and its exception to the varjyam (a strong Moon) are not applied in either view.
  • Family and local customs beyond the rules named on this page.

For your city or your own dates

A nakshatra or tithi changes at the same moment everywhere, but each place has its own sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kalam, so another city's windows start and end a few minutes apart, and a day near a change can drop out or come in. The muhurat finder computes both views of the karnavedha list for your city and your own dates, up to three months at a time, and its results offer the personal check below. Start from a month:

A personal muhurat from the kundli

A list for everyone cannot check your child's own stars or the age your family keeps. Muhurta Chintamani's Gochara prakarana adds two personal checks: Tara Bala, the day's nakshatra counted from the birth nakshatra, and Chandra Bala, the Moon's sign counted from the birth Moon sign. A day that is good in general can be weak for one person.

The personal karnavedha muhurat reads your child's saved kundli: each day's Tara Bala and Chandra Bala, the age your family keeps, the lagna times that fit the act inside each window, a Muhurat Patra (PDF) and reminders. 101 coins for the event: before you pay you see how many days are open before the child's chart is checked, and if none passes the child's chart, nothing is charged. Or 50 coins to check one date, charged for its answer, whether the date passes or not.

Or ask the AI astrologer about one date from this list: it reads the day for the place saved in your kundli and names the rule behind its answer.

Questions people ask

How many karnavedha muhurat days are there in 2027?
At New Delhi, 17 days in the calendar view and 7 days in the strict view. The most fall in January (3), May (3) and November (3). March and August to October have none. Each date on this page shows its windows in IST.
When is karnavedha (ear piercing) done?
Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana gives the 12th or 16th day of life, the 6th, 7th or 8th month, or an odd year; published calendars add the 10th day. Not in the child's birth month or an even year. A public list cannot know the child's age, so pick a date that fits it; the personal muhurat takes the month or year your family keeps.
Why are there no karnavedha dates in March and from August to October 2027?
Kharmas is left out as published calendars do — the Sun in Meena from 15 Mar 2027, 07:00 to 14 Apr 2027, 15:28 IST. Chaturmas runs from 13 Jul 2027, 12:09 to 10 Nov 2027, 09:11 IST. Venus from 6 Jul 2027, 20:42 to 17 Sep 2027, 22:48 and Jupiter from 16 Aug 2027, 19:42 to 15 Sep 2027, 03:12 IST are combust. On the other days of those months no day passes its own checks — its star, tithi, weekday, yoga or karana. So neither list here has a day in those months.
Why does the strict view keep fewer karnavedha days in 2027?
It also leaves out the lunar months of Chaitra and Pausha (Muhurta Chintamani) and applies Simhastha Guru and the days around a combustion, which many calendars do not. The strict view leaves out 10 of them: Simhastha Guru closes 6, the month rule 4 and the days around a combustion 1 (a day can fall under two rules).
Can a karnavedha be done in Kharmas or Chaturmas?
No, in either view: published calendars leave out Khara masa (the Sun in Dhanu or Meena) and Chaturmas for an ear piercing, and Muhurta Chintamani names Hari-shayana. Venus' or Jupiter's combustion closes it too, because ear-piercing is on the book's combustion list.
Are these karnavedha dates the same for my city?
Mostly, but not to the minute. A nakshatra or tithi changes at the same moment everywhere, while sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kalam are local, so another city's windows start and end a few minutes apart, and a day can drop out or come in where a change falls near a window's edge. The strict view also reads some rules by region: the rest of Simhastha, Makara Guru and Holashtak. The muhurat finder computes both views for your city.
