What kundli matching actually measures
Ashtakoot Guna Milan compares two birth charts across eight categories, or kootas, weighted from one point to eight for a total of thirty-six. Every one of them is derived from a single point in each chart: the Moon's position, specifically its nakshatra and its rashi. Varna compares temperament by elemental grouping. Vashya measures mutual accommodation. Tara reads the count between the two birth stars for wellbeing. Yoni compares the animal symbols assigned to each nakshatra for physical compatibility. Graha Maitri weighs the friendship between the two Moon-sign lords for mental rapport. Gana sorts the nakshatras into divine, human and demonic temperaments. Bhakoot examines the axis between the two Moon signs. Nadi, the heaviest at eight points, compares Ayurvedic constitution. The weighting is not arbitrary: the two kootas carrying the most points, Nadi and Bhakoot, are precisely the two with the most elaborate cancellation literature, because the tradition itself understood that a heavy penalty needs a way out.
Why the cancellations matter more than the score
A great deal of harm in this category comes from tools that report Nadi dosha as a bare verdict. Same nadi scores zero out of eight, which alone can drag an otherwise strong match below the conventional threshold, and couples have been separated on that number. But the classical texts that define the dosha define its pariharas in the same breath. Nadi dosha is widely held to be cancelled when the two Moon rashis differ, when both Moons share one nakshatra but sit in different padas, or when the Moon signs share a lord. Bhakoot dosha has its own set, including the Moon-sign lords being mutual friends. This calculator reports every cancellation that applies to your specific pair rather than leaving you with the raw penalty — and when nothing applies, it says that plainly too.

Matching without a birth time
This is the question we get asked most, and the answer is better than people expect. Guna Milan does not need a birth time. Every koota derives from the Moon, and the Moon stays in one nakshatra for roughly twenty-four hours, so a date and a place fix it correctly in the large majority of cases. That is fundamentally different from a full birth chart, where the Ascendant changes every two hours and a missing time makes the houses unusable. The honest exception is a birth date on which the Moon crossed a nakshatra boundary. When that happens, this tool tells you — the result is marked provisional and explains why, instead of quietly presenting one of two possible scores as though it were certain. That is the single most common way matching calculators mislead people, and it is avoidable.
How the score is computed here
Moon positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri Chitrapaksha ayanamsa, the same engine behind every chart on this site. The koota tables are the North Indian Parashari forms. Where published sources genuinely disagree — the Vashya half-sign split for Sagittarius and Capricorn, the asymmetric Gana matrix, the friend-and-enemy cell in Graha Maitri — the implementation states which variant it follows rather than presenting one as universal, because pretending there is a single canonical answer is its own kind of inaccuracy. The calculation is deterministic: the same two birth details always produce the same thirty-six points, with no model in the loop and nothing estimated.

Numerology compatibility, and why it is derived rather than tabulated
Alongside the Vedic calculation, this page reports an Ank Jyotish compatibility score out of one hundred, kept on a deliberately different scale so the two can never be confused. It compares Bhagyank (the destiny number), Moolank (the psyche number from the birth day) and, when both names are supplied, Naamank (the name number). Published number-compatibility tables contradict one another, so rather than picking one at random, this derives the relationship: Ank Jyotish assigns each number a ruling planet, and the compatibility between two numbers is the classical friendship between their planets — the same table the Graha Maitri koota already uses. Rahu and Ketu carry no entry in the seven-planet scheme and are read as Saturn-like and Mars-like respectively, an interpretive choice we state rather than hide. Numerology is a traditional system and is presented as one; the score is its own output, not a measured quantity.

- How many gunas out of 36 are needed for marriage?
- Conventional practice treats 18 and above as acceptable, 24 and above as good, and 28 and above as excellent. Below 18 is usually described as a low score. These bands are guidance rather than rules, and they matter far less than which specific kootas failed. Eighteen points made up of a strong Nadi and Bhakoot reads very differently from eighteen points where both of those scored zero, even though the total is identical.
- Can kundli matching be done without a birth time?
- Yes, and completely. All eight Ashtakoot kootas derive from the Moon's nakshatra and rashi, and the Moon holds one nakshatra for about twenty-four hours, so a date and place alone determine it in most cases. The exception is a birth date on which the Moon crossed a nakshatra boundary — this tool detects that and marks the result provisional rather than guessing. Birth time is still needed for Mangal Dosha, the Navamsa comparison and dasha timing, since those depend on the Ascendant.
- What is Nadi dosha and does it really prevent marriage?
- Nadi dosha occurs when both people's Moon nakshatras fall in the same Ayurvedic constitution — Aadi, Madhya or Antya. It carries the heaviest penalty, zero out of eight. But the same classical sources that define it define its cancellations: differing Moon rashis, the same nakshatra with different padas, or Moon signs sharing a lord are all widely accepted pariharas. - What is Bhakoot dosha?
- Bhakoot dosha arises when the two Moon signs sit on a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 axis from each other, scoring zero of seven. It is traditionally read for household prosperity and family wellbeing. Like Nadi it has recognised cancellations — most commonly the two Moon-sign lords being mutual friends, or both signs sharing the same lord. Those are checked and reported here rather than left out.
- Is a high Guna Milan score a guarantee of a happy marriage?
- No, and the tradition never claimed it was. Guna Milan compares one point in each chart — the Moon — across eight categories. It does not read the seventh house, the Navamsa, Mars placement, the dasha sequence either person is running, or anything at all about the two people involved. It was designed as one input among several. Treating the number as a decision is a modern misuse of a much narrower tool.
- Which is more important, Guna Milan or Mangal Dosha?
- They answer different questions and many astrologers weigh Mangal Dosha and the Navamsa seventh house more heavily than the koota total. Guna Milan compares two Moons; Mangal Dosha examines Mars placement in one chart at a time, and it has extensive cancellation conditions of its own. - Does the order of the two people change the score?
- For some kootas, yes. Varna and Gana are directional in classical practice — they are scored differently depending on which chart is treated as the groom's. That is the tradition as written, and this calculator implements it rather than quietly symmetrising it. The numerology score, by contrast, has no directionality and is fully symmetric.
- Is this the North Indian or South Indian matching system?
- This is the North Indian Ashtakoot system, the thirty-six point Guna Milan set out in the Parashari tradition. South Indian practice commonly uses a ten-koota Dashakoota scheme with different weightings, and some regional traditions add or drop factors. Where sources disagree within the Ashtakoot system itself, the variant used is documented rather than presented as the only correct one.
