Why the 7th House and Navamsa Matter Most
Marriage in your kundli is read through two complementary frames:
- The 7th house in your D1 (rashi) chart. The 7th is the house of partnership, marriage, business partners and one-on-one relationships. Its sign, planetary occupants, the placement of the 7th lord, and the planets aspecting it together form the broad arc of your marital life — when, with whom, and what kind of relationship dynamic.
- The Navamsa (D9) chart. The D9 is the 9th-harmonic divisional chart that classical astrologers reserve specifically for marriage and dharma analysis. The D9 often reveals what the D1 hides — a planet that looks weak in the rashi chart can be vargottama (powerfully placed) in the Navamsa, and vice versa. Most experienced Jyotishis won't make a marriage prediction without examining both charts.
ProxaAI computes both automatically and reads them together — not as separate reports, but as a unified marriage signature.
Mangal Dosha — Real, Misunderstood, and Often Cancelled
If you've ever been told you're 'manglik', you've encountered one of the most-feared and most-misread concepts in Indian astrology. Mangal Dosha is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — the South Indian verse B.V. Raman quotes adds the 2nd — counted from three reference points: the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. In Drik Panchang's words, a person is non-Manglik only if none of the three is afflicted. It's real — but it's also very often excepted by conditions the classical texts list themselves, which most matching apps don't check.
ProxaAI reads Mars from all three reference points and keeps them apart. It first applies the textual exceptions: Mars in its own or exaltation sign; the house-wise sign list (for example Mars in Leo or Aquarius, in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, in the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces, in the 12th in Taurus, Libra or Sagittarius); a Cancer or Leo Ascendant, for the count from the Lagna only; and Mars joined by Jupiter or the Moon, which B.V. Raman says counteracts the dosha. Jupiter's aspect on Mars, Mercury with Mars or aspecting it, or Mars in a friend's sign softens the grade by one step instead of cancelling it. Only then does the report grade what remains by how many of the three references are afflicted — one mild, two medium, all three high — and name the school behind each grade: the North or South Indian verse it counted, and Raman's view that the dosha from Venus weighs most, then the Moon, then the Lagna. There is no classical 'partial' (anshik) grade, so none is reported. It does not apply the 'after 28' belief, which has no classical source, or the Saturn-aspect and retrograde exceptions found in some popular lists. The Manglik-to-Manglik rule (dosha-samya) needs your partner's chart, so it is judged in kundli matching, which reads Mangal Dosha in both charts and says whether the two cancel. Read the full Mangal Dosha guide.
The exceptions are the part almost every popular treatment omits. Our full Mangal Dosha guide separates the ones the texts give from the beliefs that have grown up around them, and explains why the reference point matters.
Marriage Timing — Dasha + Transit Confluence
The single most-asked marriage question is "when will I marry?" Vedic astrology answers it through dasha-transit confluence:
- Active Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 7th lord. When the planet ruling your 7th house becomes your active dasha lord (or sub-lord), marriage themes activate.
- Antardasha of Venus or Jupiter. Venus rules marriage karaka for men; Jupiter rules it for women. Their Antardasha periods are classical marriage windows.
- Jupiter transit through the 1st, 5th, 7th or 11th house from natal Moon. Jupiter's gochar through these houses opens a marriage window of typically 12-18 months.
- Saturn aspecting the 7th house from transit. Saturn slows and structures relationship matters; its transit can either delay or solidify marriage depending on dasha context.
When two or more of these align, ProxaAI names that stretch as the likely marriage window, with the dasha period behind it and its confidence in stars rather than a percentage.
Timing rests on the Vimshottari dasha sequence and on the Moon's janma nakshatra, which sets where that sequence begins. Neither can be pinned down precisely without an accurate birth time — without one, every dasha date is given as a range.
Compatibility — Beyond the Ashtakoot Score
The traditional 36-point Ashtakoot Guna Milan system (covered in detail in our Kundli Matching guide) is one input — not the verdict. A 28/36 score on Ashtakoot is excellent by the conventional bands (18 acceptable, 24 good, 28 excellent), but it tells you little if Mangal Dosha is one-sided — left in one chart after its own cancellations and absent from the other, so there is no dosha-samya — or if the Navamsa charts show divergent dharma. Conversely, a moderate 22/36 score paired with strong 7th-house compatibility and well-placed Venus in both charts is often a much better match than the score suggests.
ProxaAI's kundli matching computes, for the two charts: the Ashtakoot score with Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana dosha and the cancellations that apply; Mangal Dosha in both charts — from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus — and whether the two cancel (dosha-samya); and, when both birth times are known, the Navamsa comparison: each chart's seventh lord and its dignity, the Navamsa lagna and Navamsa seventh lord, and Venus and Jupiter in both. The AI reading weighs these together, so the output isn't a number — it's a direction with caveats.
Guna Milan scores eight koota factors, and the two that carry the most weight — Bhakoot and Nadi — are covered in our kundli matching guide. You can generate both charts from the free kundli tool first.
You can run the eight kootas yourself first: the free kundli matching tool gives the full 36-point Ashtakoot score with Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana cancellations and both charts' Mangal Dosha, and needs no birth time.
Sample Reading Excerpt
From a marriage timing reading (anonymised):
"Your 7th house in Cancer with Moon as 7th lord placed in the 11th makes marriage a friend-circle or community event rather than a family-arrangement event — likely someone you meet through shared work or interest. Mars in your 2nd house is a Mangal Dosha placement in the South Indian reckoning, but Mars in Aquarius is one of the classical exceptions — the dosha is formally present but excepted. The Jupiter Mahadasha you entered in March 2019 is a classic marriage window; specifically, the Jupiter-Venus Antardasha (January 2027 – September 2029) carries the strongest signal. Don't force the pace before then."
How to Get Your Marriage Reading
If you're considering a specific match, the most useful path is two free kundlis (yours + your partner's) followed by an AI compatibility reading that includes the Ashtakoot score, both charts' Mangal Dosha with the dosha-samya and — with both birth times — the Navamsa comparison. Generate your free kundli to start. For timing-only questions ("when will I marry?"), only your kundli is needed.

Match Two KundlisFrequently Asked Questions
- Is the Mangal Dosha cancellation list really enough to ignore the dosha?
- When a classical exception applies — Mars in its own or exaltation sign, a sign from the house-wise list, a Cancer or Leo Ascendant (for the count from the Lagna only), or Mars joined by Jupiter or the Moon — the texts treat the dosha as cancelled, not merely softened; that is part of the doctrine, not modern apologetics. Other popular 'cancellations' are weaker: Jupiter's aspect softens the dosha rather than removing it, the Manglik-to-Manglik rule (dosha-samya) needs both charts and is applied in kundli matching, and the 'age 28' and retrograde-Mars beliefs are not part of the exception lists ProxaAI follows — the 'age 28' one has no classical source at all. ProxaAI applies the exceptions, grades what remains and names the conditions it did not apply, so you can see exactly why the verdict is what it is.
- How accurate is astrological marriage timing prediction?
- Marriage timing has some of the clearest signatures in Vedic astrology — the periods of the 7th lord, Venus or Jupiter, and Jupiter's transit from your Moon — so a reading can name a window, typically 12-18 months, rather than a specific date. Its confidence is highest when two or more signatures align (e.g. a 7th-lord dasha with a Jupiter transit), and it is shown in stars, never as a percentage: no method here has been calibrated against outcomes well enough to earn one.
- Can the same kundli show multiple marriages?
- Yes. Multiple marriage signatures include: 7th house with multiple planets (especially Mercury or Saturn), 7th lord conjunct or aspected by malefics, or Venus afflicted in the rashi chart but well-placed in D9. ProxaAI flags these signatures and contextualizes them — multiple marriage potential isn't the same as multiple marriage destiny; dasha activation matters.
- Does astrology compatibility predict divorce?
- It can flag risk factors — heavily afflicted 7th houses on either side, Mangal Dosha in one chart that the other does not share (no dosha-samya), divergent Navamsa dharma — but a low compatibility score isn't a divorce prediction. Plenty of 18/36-Ashtakoot couples are happily married 30 years in; plenty of 32/36 couples separated. Compatibility analysis identifies stress patterns to be aware of, not deterministic outcomes.
- Should I cancel an arranged marriage based on a kundli mismatch?
- Probably not on Ashtakoot score alone. A mismatch flag should trigger a deeper reading — both charts' Mangal Dosha and whether the two cancel, the Navamsa comparison, Venus and Jupiter in both charts, and the dasha each person is running. If multiple deep-layer signals also flag concerns, it's a serious data point. If the deeper layers look fine and only the Ashtakoot score is moderate, it's not a stop signal. Use ProxaAI's full compatibility reading rather than score alone.
