Simhastha Guru 2026–27: What It Means for Wedding Dates

Jupiter enters sidereal Leo (Simha) on 31 October 2026, at about noon IST. For many of India's popular calendars nothing changes: the wedding season still opens after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in late November. But a family pandit who follows the classical muhurta books closely may tell you something different — that while Guru is in Simha, weddings and several other rites should wait. This is the Simhastha Guru rule, and it is why two wedding lists for the same city can look nothing alike this winter.

This guide explains what the rule says, where it applies, the dates it covers in 2026 and 2027, and how to decide which view your family follows. Every date here was computed, not copied; the method is at the end.

What Simhastha Guru Means

Simha is Leo and Guru is Jupiter, so Simhastha Guru (also written Singhast or Sinhastha Guru) simply means "Jupiter standing in Leo". Jupiter takes about twelve years to go round the zodiac, so it reaches Leo roughly once every twelve years and stays for about a year. The last time, by the Lahiri ayanamsa, was from July 2015 to August 2016. The same placement gives the Kumbh Melas at Nashik–Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain their name, Simhastha.

In muhurta — the choice of a day — Jupiter matters because it is the planet of dharma and of the samskaras. The books treat Jupiter in Leo the way they treat a combust (asta) Jupiter or Venus: as a time to postpone the big, first-time rites of life.

What the Books Say

The rule is written in Muhurta Chintamani (Rama Daivajna, written around 1600), in its first chapter, the Shubhashubha prakarana, and it is repeated in Dharma Sindhu, in its section on the setting (asta) of Jupiter and Venus. Read together, they say:

  • The acts covered. The list that is closed while Jupiter or Venus is combust — weddings, upanayana (janeu), mundan, ear-piercing, laying the foundation of a house and entering a new one, installing a deity, digging wells and tanks, and similar first-time rites — is also closed while Jupiter is in Leo. (The book treats Jupiter in Capricorn, its sign of debilitation, in a similar way, with its own regional limits.)
  • The first part of Leo, everywhere. Jupiter in Magha, or in the Simha navamsha that follows it — together, all of Magha and the first pada of Purva Phalguni, which is the first 16°40′ of Leo — is condemned in every region.
  • The rest of Leo, in some regions. Beyond 16°40′ the bar holds only in the land between the Ganga and the Godavari. In Gujarat, Bengal (Gauda) and Odisha (Kalinga) the whole of Leo is barred.
  • The exception. While the Sun is in Mesha (Aries) the rule is lifted everywhere, and Dharma Sindhu notes that some authorities also allow the Sun in Vrisha. This exception does not come into play in 2026–27, because in April and May 2027 Jupiter is back in Cancer; it does in April and May 2028 (below).

Two smaller points complete the picture. Muhurta Chintamani also records a minority view: that the same acts should wait while Jupiter is retrograde — in this cycle from 13 December 2026 to 13 April 2027 — or moving unusually fast (atichara), as it does this autumn, entering Leo after only five months in Cancer. And not every rite is postponed. The books exempt some from the combustion rules — an annaprashan at its prescribed time, for example — and the same book's Griha-pravesha prakarana asks for no check of combustion or of Simhastha when a family moves back into an old house or into one rebuilt after damage.

We cite these texts by chapter. Verse numbers differ between printed editions, so we do not quote them.

The Dates for 2026–27

Jupiter's path this time is unusual. It enters Leo, moves less than three degrees, turns retrograde and slips back into Cancer; then it returns in mid-2027 and crosses the whole sign; and in 2028 it backs into the last part of Leo for five more months.

Jupiter's position (sidereal, Lahiri) From To Strict reading
First 16°40′ of Leo (in Magha) 31 Oct 2026, ~12:00 IST 25 Jan 2027, ~01:30 IST Barred in every region
Back in Cancer 25 Jan 2027 26 Jun 2027 No Simhastha
First 16°40′ of Leo (Magha, then P. Phalguni pada 1) 26 Jun 2027, ~05:20 IST 15 Sep 2027, ~10:00 IST Barred in every region
Rest of Leo (16°40′ to 30°) 15 Sep 2027 26 Nov 2027, ~18:45 IST Barred between the Ganga and the Godavari, and in Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha
In Virgo 26 Nov 2027 28 Feb 2028 No Simhastha
Rest of Leo again (retrograde, back to about 23°) 28 Feb 2028, ~19:15 IST 24 Jul 2028, ~15:35 IST Barred between the Ganga and the Godavari, and in Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha, except while the Sun is in Mesha

Jupiter turns retrograde on 13 December 2026 at 2°47′ of Leo, so on this first visit it never leaves Magha. On the evening of 26 November 2027 Jupiter moves into Virgo, but it is not quite done with Leo: retrograde again, it slips back into the last part of the sign from 28 February to 24 July 2028 and turns direct at about 23° of Leo. That is past 16°40′, so in the strict reading those months are closed only between the Ganga and the Godavari and in Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha, and even there not while the Sun is in Mesha (13 April to 14 May 2028). After 24 July 2028 the rule does not apply anywhere until Jupiter returns to Leo, about twelve years later.

Why Wedding Lists Will Disagree This Season

Many popular printed calendars and wedding-date websites apply the season rules — the Sun's sign, Chaturmas, combustion, an adhika month — but not Simhastha. Their lists open the season straight after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November 2026, and many show dates from 21 November. A pandit who applies Muhurta Chintamani strictly will show no wedding dates at all from 31 October 2026 to 24 January 2027, and will close the summer of 2027 on 26 June instead of in early July.

Neither side is being careless. They follow different authorities, and each is followed by many families and pandits. What matters is that you know which one your list follows — and which one your elders and your pandit follow. Why muhurat dates differ covers the other reasons two lists can disagree.

The Wedding Seasons in Both Views

This is the season-level picture for a wedding in India, from Dev Uthani 2026 to the end of 2027. The calendar view is what many popular printed calendars publish; the strict view adds Simhastha as Muhurta Chintamani and Dharma Sindhu describe it.

Period Calendar view Strict view
21 Nov – 15 Dec 2026 Open (after Dev Uthani, Sun in Vrischika) Closed: Simhastha
16 Dec 2026 – 14 Jan 2027 Closed: Kharmas (Sun in Dhanu) Closed: Kharmas and Simhastha
15 – 24 Jan 2027 Open (Sun in Makara) Closed: Simhastha
25 Jan – 14 Mar 2027 Open Open (Jupiter back in Cancer)
15 Mar – 14 Apr 2027 Closed: Kharmas (Sun in Meena) Closed
15 Apr – 25 Jun 2027 Open Open
26 Jun – 6 Jul 2027 Open Closed: Jupiter re-enters Leo
7 Jul – 16 Nov 2027 Closed: Venus combust, Chaturmas, Sun in Tula Closed
17 Nov – 15 Dec 2027 Open Open north of the Ganga and south of the Godavari; from 27 Nov in the Ganga–Godavari belt, Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha

"Open" means the season allows weddings — not that every day in it is good. Each day still needs its own checks: the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, the lagna at the time of the ceremony, and the couple's own charts. The "old" days before a planet sets and the "child" days after it rises (three to ten days, by region) trim the open seasons a little further. Kharmas 2026–27 explains the two closed months in December–January and March–April.

What Your Family Can Do

  1. Ask which reading your family follows. Many families have never had to decide, because Jupiter was last in Leo in 2015–16. Your family pandit will know whether the household goes by the printed calendar or by the stricter books, and which regional reading applies to your town.
  2. If your date is already fixed between November 2026 and January 2027, there is no reason for alarm. This is a question of which tradition the family follows, not of danger. Many families will marry on calendar-view dates this season; families who follow the strict view will look from 25 January 2027 onwards.
  3. If you are still choosing, 25 January to 14 March 2027 and mid-April to 25 June 2027 are open in both views. A date chosen there will satisfy both kinds of calendar. (A family that also keeps the minority view on a retrograde Jupiter would wait until after 13 April 2027.)
  4. Check the couple, not only the calendar. A muhurat is chosen for two people. Start with kundli matching for both charts, and see what each chart says about timing in marriage prediction.
  5. Check the day itself for your city. Sunrise, the tithi at sunrise and the day's windows change from city to city — see today's panchang and the choghadiya for your city. Choghadiya is a custom for everyday work; it does not replace a wedding muhurat.

When ProxaAI checks a wedding date, it gives both views and names the rule behind each "no", so the decision stays with your family and your pandit.

How These Dates Were Computed

Jupiter's and the Sun's positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the standard of the Government of India's Rashtriya Panchang. Each sign change was found to the minute and is given here in Indian Standard Time, rounded. A calendar that uses another ayanamsa moves these boundaries. With B.V. Raman's ayanamsa, for example, the Sun's sankrantis come about a day and a half earlier, and Jupiter, which moves slowly, enters Leo about eleven days earlier (around 20 October 2026). Almanacs computed from the old Vakyam tables differ in their own way. Our methodology page describes the engine.

Frequently asked questions

Are there wedding muhurats in November and December 2026?
In the calendar view, yes: the season opens after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November 2026 and runs to 15 December; Kharmas begins on the 16th. In the strict view, which applies Simhastha Guru, there are no wedding dates from 31 October 2026 until 25 January 2027. Which list to follow is a family decision; both are followed by families and pandits.
Does Simhastha Guru apply in my region?
While Jupiter is in the first 16°40′ of Leo (31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027, and 26 June to 15 September 2027), the strict reading applies in every region. From 15 September to 26 November 2027, and again from 28 February to 24 July 2028 (except while the Sun is in Mesha), it applies only between the Ganga and the Godavari and in Gujarat, Bengal and Odisha. Your family pandit can tell you which side of that line your town falls on.
Is griha pravesh also affected?
Entering a new house is, in the strict view: Muhurta Chintamani puts it on the same list as weddings. Moving back into an old house, or into one rebuilt after damage, is different: the book's Griha-pravesha chapter asks for no check of combustion or of Simhastha for it.
When does Simhastha Guru end?
Jupiter leaves Leo for Virgo on 26 November 2027, in the evening (IST). Moving backwards, it returns to the last part of Leo from 28 February to 24 July 2028; in the strict reading those months matter only where the whole of Leo is barred, and not while the Sun is in Mesha. After 24 July 2028 the rule does not apply anywhere until Jupiter returns to Leo, about twelve years later.
Does a retrograde Jupiter matter?
Muhurta Chintamani records it only as a minority view (the same view also covers Jupiter's fast move, atichara), and many calendars and pandits do not apply it. Jupiter is retrograde from 13 December 2026 to 13 April 2027, so it matters only if your family follows that stricter opinion.
