Mundan Muhurat: The Right Year, the Season and the Rules

Mundan (मुंडन), the first shaving of a child's hair — chudakarana or chaula in the books — is one of the samskaras done only in a set season. Muhurta Chintamani, the muhurta handbook Rama Daivajna wrote around 1600, keeps it to the Sun's northern course (Uttarayana), so most of every year is closed to it. In 2027 the open stretch runs from mid-January to early July, and within it the rising sign (lagna) has to meet the act's own rules — which leaves very few days.

This guide sets out the rules with their sources — the season, the tithi, weekday and nakshatra, the lagna, the hour and the child's year — shows how they fall in 2027, and lists what a public list cannot check for your child.

Too few days for a year page: at New Delhi 2027 keeps 3 days in the calendar view (3 in June) and 1 in the strict view (1 in June), so there is no Mundan Muhurat 2027 page; the free muhurat finder lists the mundan days for your own city in both views, with their windows.

The Rules at a Glance

  • The season: Uttarayana, the Sun from Makara to Mithuna, without the March–April Kharmas, and never while Venus or Jupiter is combust. The Sun enters Makara at 21:10 IST on 14 January 2027, so November and December 2026 have no mundan date at all.
  • The day: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi; a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; one of the soft, movable or swift stars.
  • The lagna: a benefic's sign, the 8th house empty but for Venus, and none of the Sun, Mars or Saturn in a kendra.
  • The hour: daytime only, never at night; the strict view keeps the forenoon.
  • The year of the child: the one your family keeps — the third or an odd year in Muhurta Chintamani.

Both views keep only the hours whose rising sign (lagna) passes the mundan's lagna rules, read without a birth chart (below). At New Delhi that leaves 3 days in the calendar view — Wednesday 2 June, Monday 7 June and Monday 14 June 2027 — and 1 in the strict view, 2 June. The times are for New Delhi in IST, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa; other cities differ by minutes, and now and then by a day.

Which Year of the Child

The books leave the year to the family. Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana gives the third year or an odd year, "by the family's custom", and the Manusmriti the first or the third year. Many families keep the first, the third or the fifth. Some printed calendars add that a girl's mundan is done in an even year; we did not find that rule in the book, so keep it if your family does.

A public list cannot know the child's age, so every date on it is for any child: choose one in the year your family keeps. This site counts the child's years from the birth date — the first year runs from the birth date to the day before the first birthday.

The Season: Uttarayana Without Kharmas

Muhurta Chintamani has a mundan done in Uttarayana, while the Sun moves through Makara, Kumbha, Meena, Mesha, Vrishabha and Mithuna, and published calendars apply the same. They also leave out the month of the Sun in Meena, the March–April Kharmas. So 2027 opens and closes like this at New Delhi (IST):

Stretch For a mundan
Until 14 Jan 2027, 21:10 Closed in both views: the southern course
14 Jan, 21:10 – 15 Mar, 07:00 Open: the Sun in Makara and Kumbha
15 Mar, 07:00 – 14 Apr, 15:28 Closed in both views: Kharmas, the Sun in Meena
14 Apr, 15:28 – 6 Jul, 20:42 Open: the Sun in Mesha, Vrishabha and Mithuna
6 Jul, 20:42 – 17 Sep, 22:48 Closed in both views: Venus combust
From 17 Jul 2027, 05:48 Closed in both views: the southern course, until January 2028

Inside the open stretches the strict view closes more:

  • Simhastha Guru. Jupiter is in Magha or the first pada of Purva Phalguni until 25 January 2027 (01:31 IST) and again from 26 June 2027 (05:18 IST). Muhurta Chintamani puts a mundan on the list of acts kept away from Jupiter in Leo; many calendars do not apply the rule. The Simhastha Guru guide explains it and its regions.
  • The lunar month of Chaitra, 7 April to 6 May 2027: Muhurta Chintamani leaves it out for a mundan.
  • The "old" days before Venus sets, 29 June to 6 July 2027: the seven days of Dharma Sindhu's middle view.

Two kinds of day are closed in both views. Garga, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana, allows no auspicious act on the day of a sankranti (the Sun's entry into a sign) or of an eclipse, "even at its due time". The calendar view closes the sankranti's punya day as published calendars reckon it, and the strict view also the day that holds a night-time entry. In 2027 the solar eclipse of 6 February closes that day.

Tithi, Weekday and Nakshatra

  • Tithi: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi of either half — Vasishtha's list, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani's Samskara prakarana; B.V. Raman's Muhurtha gives the same.
  • Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (Muhurta Chintamani). The strict view keeps Monday for the bright half only, as Parashara, quoted there, asks; the two Mondays of 2027, 7 and 14 June, both fall in the bright half.
  • Nakshatra: best in Punarvasu, Mrigashira, Dhanishtha, Shravana, Revati, Pushya, Chitra, Ashwini or Hasta, and also in Swati, Shatabhisha or Jyeshtha — the soft, movable and swift stars with Jyeshtha and without Anuradha, as Muhurta Chintamani gives them; Raman grades the first nine favourable.
  • Never a kshaya tithi, one current at no sunrise at the place: Muhurta Chintamani bars it for a karnavedha, and a present-day almanac printed no samskara day in one on the days compared.
  • Never the star's varjyam — its tyajya ghatis, the four of the star's sixty parts that follow the count the book gives for it, in proportion to the star's own length (Muhurta Chintamani, Vivaha prakarana: avoided in every auspicious act; the Jyotih-sagara, quoted in its commentary, names the mundan among the rites it spoils).
  • The rest of the panchang: no Bhadra (Vishti karana), no Vyatipata or Vaidhriti yoga, no gandanta, and Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika cut out of every window — the rules every list on this site uses.

The Lagna: Why 2027 Has So Few Days

The rising sign decides the hour within a day, and for a mundan both views check it, as published calendars do. Only the hours whose lagna is a benefic's sign count — never Mesha, Simha, Vrishchika, Makara or Kumbha (Kashyapa, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani's commentary, the Piyushadhara) — with the 8th house empty or held by Venus alone (Parashara, quoted there) and none of the Sun, Mars or Saturn in a kendra (Muhurta Chintamani, Samskara prakarana). Each window is such a stretch of a ghati or more; a day with none is closed.

Published calendars read the 8th house by the seven grahas: Rahu or Ketu there does not fill it, and so the calendar view reads it. The strict view counts the nodes too, which closes 7 and 14 June — a Mithuna lagna with Rahu in Makara, its 8th. A widely used almanac printed 7 June as a mundan day in all three cities it was read for.

In 2027 the lagna rules close a mundan's season almost whole. Three days that pass every panchang rule — 11 and 25 February and 5 July — keep no stretch of a ghati with a rising sign that meets them once Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, Gulika and the star's varjyam are cut. The days left are the three of June.

Forenoon or the Whole Day?

Published calendars keep a mundan to the daytime and never at night. B.V. Raman is stricter: "Tonsure should always be done in the forenoon." The strict view follows him and keeps only the first half of the daytime. In 2027 every calendar-view window at New Delhi already lies in the morning — the latest, on 2 June, ends at 10:35 IST — so the forenoon rule closes none of them there. If your family keeps the forenoon in another year, read the calendar list and take its morning windows.

Checked Against a Published Almanac

The calendar view was compared day for day with a widely used almanac's daily mundan tool for New Delhi from 21 October 2026 to 27 January 2027, Mumbai from 1 November 2026 to 29 January 2027 and Kolkata from 14 to 27 January 2027, then 16 to 22 November 2026 at Kolkata and 8 to 14 February 2027 with 5 chosen days from February to June 2027 at all three cities, 246 day pages in all: it published 6 days, on 2 and 7 June 2027 in all three cities, and the calendar view keeps 5 of them and adds none. The 6th, 2 June 2027 at Kolkata, has one short card that lies in the first part of Ashwini's varjyam, which Muhurta Chintamani starts a little before that almanac does, so no clean ghati is left there. Every other published window lay inside one of ours or was cut by Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda or Gulika, which this site cuts for every act. That almanac keeps no year list for a mundan, so the comparison is a sample, and a small one.

What a Public List Cannot Check

These lists are computed for no particular person. Before you fix a date, a few things depend on your child and your family:

  • The child's own chart. The lagna rules above are read without a birth chart; the one that reads the child's — no lagna 8th from the child's birth sign or lagna — is left to the priest, or to the personal muhurat. The benefic navamsha the book also asks for is not applied here.
  • The child's own stars. The day's Tara, counted from the child's birth star, and the Moon's place from the child's Moon sign. Kashyapa, quoted in Muhurta Chintamani, counts the child's own birth star as good for a mundan.
  • The child's birth month. Muhurta Chintamani leaves it out.
  • A first-born child. The book keeps a first-born's mundan out of the month of Jyeshtha. In 2027 the dates of Jyeshtha (5 June – 4 July 2027) are not for a first-born — 7 and 14 June among them.
  • The mother's pregnancy. The book holds a mundan back while the child's mother is more than five months pregnant, unless the child is over five.
  • A family event. After a wedding in the family, Muhurta Chintamani's Vivaha prakarana closes six months to a mundan; many families, as a conservative reading of the commentaries, also wait six months after an upanayana or another mundan.

The personal mundan muhurat at the end of this page asks for the child's kundli and the city, keeps only the dates in your family's year, and checks the lagna and the child's stars.

Planning a Mundan

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mundan muhurat in November or December 2026?
No. A mundan is done only while the Sun is in its northern course (Uttarayana), and the Sun enters Makara only at 21:10 IST on 14 January 2027. Both views therefore have no date in the rest of 2026; the season opens in mid-January 2027.
Why are there so few mundan dates in 2027?
Because both views keep only the hours whose rising sign (lagna) meets the mundan's rules: a benefic's sign, the 8th house empty but for Venus, and none of the Sun, Mars or Saturn in a kendra. With the panchang rules, that leaves New Delhi 3 days in the calendar view, 2, 7 and 14 June, and 1 in the strict view, 2 June. A widely used almanac printed its own mundan days on 2 and 7 June too. Other cities differ: the free muhurat finder lists the days for yours.
Which year of the child is right for mundan?
The one your family keeps. Muhurta Chintamani gives the third year or an odd year, "by the family's custom", and the Manusmriti the first or the third year. A public list cannot know the child's age, so every date on it is for any child; choose one that falls in your family's year.
Can mundan be done in Kharmas or in Chaitra?
Not in the March–April Kharmas: the Sun in Meena (15 March, 07:00 to 14 April, 15:28 IST in 2027) is left out by published calendars, and both views follow them. The lunar month of Chaitra (7 April to 6 May 2027) is left out only in the strict view, as Muhurta Chintamani asks; published calendars keep it.
Can mundan be done on a Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday?
Not by these rules. Muhurta Chintamani gives Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a mundan, and the strict view keeps Monday for the bright half of the month only. So no date on these lists falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a Tuesday.
Can a mundan be done while the mother is pregnant?
Muhurta Chintamani holds it back while the child's mother is more than five months pregnant, unless the child is already over five. A public list cannot check this; the personal muhurat asks.
