Every wedding date on a printed list, or on the Vivah Muhurat 2027 page, is computed for no one in particular: the day's panchang passes the wedding rules, at a place. A couple's muhurat goes one step further and reads both birth charts. Its best-known part is Tribala, the "strength of three" — Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon, each counted from a partner's birth Moon sign.
This guide explains Tribala as Muhurta Chintamani gives it, works it out for two real wedding dates and all twelve Moon signs, and lists the other checks that need both charts.
Why a Couple's Date Needs Both Charts
A year page tells you which days are clean for anyone at New Delhi. It cannot tell you whether a day is good for the two of you. The books add checks that depend on each partner's birth Moon:
- Tribala — Jupiter for the bride, the Sun for the groom, the Moon for both (below).
- Tara — the day's nakshatra counted from each partner's birth star; Janma (1st), Vipat (3rd), Pratyak (5th) and Naidhana (7th) of each nine are unfavourable — the bride's own Janma excepted for her wedding.
- Chandra Bala — the day's Moon counted from each partner's Moon sign.
- The lagna — not the 8th sign from either partner's Moon sign or lagna.
Start with kundli matching: it is free and checks the two charts against each other. The muhurat comes after, to find the date.
What Tribala Is
Muhurta Chintamani's Vivaha prakarana, with its Hindi commentary's table, counts three grahas from the birth Moon signs:
| Graha | Counted from | Good | Good with worship | Bad |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | The bride's Moon sign | 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 | 1, 3, 6, 10 | 4, 8, 12 |
| Sun | The groom's Moon sign | 3, 6, 10, 11 | 1, 2, 5, 7, 9 | 4, 8, 12 |
| Moon | Each partner's Moon sign | 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11; 2, 5, 9 in the bright half | — | 8 (Chandrashtama); 4, 12 and, in the dark half, 2, 5, 9: unfavourable |
"House 1" is the birth Moon sign itself, "house 2" the next sign, and so on. "With worship" means the books allow the date with worship of that graha (Jupiter's houses come from the book's Samskara prakarana).
Jupiter's exception. The next verse changes Jupiter's result by the sign it stands in. In its own sign, its exaltation or the signs the verse names as friendly — Dhanu, Meena, Karka, Mesha, Vrishchika — or in a Dhanu or Meena navamsha, or vargottama (in the same sign in the rasi and the navamsha), it is good from any house. In Makara or in Mithuna, Kanya, Tula or Vrishabha it gives poor results even from a good house.
Is Jupiter needed for the bride? The Hindi commentary, quoting Vyasa, does not require Jupiter's strength for an adult bride. Many families still check it. The personal vivah muhurat on this site shows it on every date and never closes a day for it; the Sun for the groom, by contrast, is a rule of the strict view.
A Worked Example: Two Wedding Dates, Twelve Moon Signs
Take two dates from the year lists at New Delhi: 21 November 2026, a calendar-view date, and 27 January 2027, the first date of the strict view. At noon on 21 November, Jupiter is at about 2° of Simha in a Mesha navamsha — neither exception applies — and the Sun is in Vrishchika. On 27 January, Jupiter has moved back into Karka, its exaltation, and the Sun is in Makara.
The house of each graha from each birth Moon sign, and its state:
| Birth Moon sign | Jupiter for the bride, 21 Nov 2026 | Jupiter for the bride, 27 Jan 2027 | Sun for the groom, 21 Nov 2026 | Sun for the groom, 27 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha | 5: good | 4: good (exception) | 8: bad | 10: good |
| Vrishabha | 4: bad | 3: good (exception) | 7: with worship | 9: with worship |
| Mithuna | 3: with worship | 2: good | 6: good | 8: bad |
| Karka | 2: good | 1: good (exception) | 5: with worship | 7: with worship |
| Simha | 1: with worship | 12: good (exception) | 4: bad | 6: good |
| Kanya | 12: bad | 11: good | 3: good | 5: with worship |
| Tula | 11: good | 10: good (exception) | 2: with worship | 4: bad |
| Vrishchika | 10: with worship | 9: good | 1: with worship | 3: good |
| Dhanu | 9: good | 8: good (exception) | 12: bad | 2: with worship |
| Makara | 8: bad | 7: good | 11: good | 1: with worship |
| Kumbha | 7: good | 6: good (exception) | 10: good | 12: bad |
| Meena | 6: with worship | 5: good | 9: with worship | 11: good |
Two things stand out. In Karka, its exaltation, Jupiter is good for every bride on 27 January 2027 — the exception at work. And the same date can be good for one couple and weak for another: on 21 November 2026, a groom with the Moon in Kumbha has the Sun in his 10th, good, while a groom with the Moon in Mesha has it in his 8th, bad.
The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days, so its part of Tribala — Chandra Bala — is read for each window of the day. Avoid the 8th from either partner's Moon sign (Chandrashtama).
