In Vedic astrology, Raj Yoga ("royal union") is a specific combination of planets that produces success, recognition, and authority. The literature describes hundreds of named Raj Yogas; the central family rests on one principle: the lord of a kendra (angular house) associates with the lord of a trikona (trinal house) — two different planets, under conditions strict enough that many charts have none.
What Are Kendras and Trikonas?
Kendras (angular houses): 1, 4, 7, 10 — these are the structural pillars of the chart, governing self, home, partnerships, and career.
Trikonas (trinal houses): 1, 5, 9 — these are the dharmic pillars, governing identity, creativity/intelligence, and fortune.
The 1st house is both kendra and trikona, making it especially powerful.
The Rule — and the Conditions That Void It
A kendra lord (of the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) and a trikona lord (of the 1st, 5th or 9th) — two different planets — form Raj Yoga when they are joined in one sign, aspect each other, or exchange signs (parivartana). Three conditions decide whether that association counts at all:
- Both lords outside the 6th, 8th and 12th houses.
- Neither lord debilitated nor combust. Combustion uses each planet's own distance from the Sun: the Moon 12°, Mars 17°, Mercury 14° (12° when retrograde), Jupiter 11°, Venus 10° (8° when retrograde), Saturn 15°.
- Neither lord also owning an evil house — the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 11th, the lagna lord's own 8th excepted. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (34.15) says such lords give no yoga by mere association, and its per-lagna verses deny, for example, Leo's Jupiter–Venus and the Saturn–Jupiter pair for Aries and Gemini.
A pair that fails any of these does not form a weak Raj Yoga; it forms none. A single planet that owns a kendra and a trikona by itself is the yogakaraka — Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.
Raj Yogas — and the Yogas Often Listed Beside Them
The kendra-trikona family:
1. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga — the 9th lord (dharma) and the 10th lord (karma) associated under the same conditions. Produces alignment between purpose and profession — widely ranked the strongest single Raj Yoga. For six lagnas (Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Capricorn, Aquarius) one of the two lords also owns an evil house and the pair gives no yoga, and for Taurus one planet, Saturn, rules both houses — one reason ProxaAI's rule engine finds it in only about one chart in thirty.
2. The yogakaraka — the one planet that owns a kendra and a trikona, placed in a kendra or trikona, neither debilitated nor combust. It gives the yoga on its own.
Carrying the name, formed differently:
3. Vipreeta Raj Yoga — the lord of a dusthana (6, 8, 12) placed in a dusthana, away from the lords of good houses (the Harsha, Sarala and Vimala forms). Counterintuitively auspicious — produces success born from struggle and adversity.
Related yogas often listed as Raj Yogas — they are not formed by kendra and trikona lords:
4. Gajakesari Yoga — Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon or the lagna, joined or aspected by Mercury, Venus or a waxing Moon, and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 36.3); the bare Moon–Jupiter kendra does not count. Confers wisdom, popularity, and respectful bearing.
5. Hamsa Yoga — Jupiter in its own or exalted sign in a kendra. One of the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas — produces a person of grace, learning, and high principles.
6. Malavya Yoga — Venus in own or exalted sign in a kendra. Produces beauty, wealth, and artistic recognition.
7. Ruchaka Yoga — Mars in own or exalted sign in a kendra. Warriors, leaders, and bold action-takers.
8. Bhadra Yoga — Mercury in own or exalted sign in a kendra. Sharp intellect, communication, and business success.
9. Shasha Yoga — Saturn in own or exalted sign in a kendra. Discipline-driven success, often in service of large institutions.
